Churchill at War
Directed by Malcolm venville and produced by Sara Enright.
One of the key moments we helped bring to life features Winston Churchill standing on the rooftop of 10 Downing Street, overlooking a bombed-out London during the height of the Blitz. This emotionally charged sequence required us to digitally reconstruct 1940s London with a focus on accuracy, atmosphere, and historical weight.
We started by gathering aerial footage taken during the Blitz, historical photographs, and wartime maps. These resources guided our recreation of the London skyline, allowing us to identify which landmarks would have been visible from Churchill’s vantage point at that moment in history.
We rebuilt key landmarks including St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Palace of Westminster, Big Ben, the War Office, and many others, as they appeared in the 1940s. We extended the environment with period-accurate neighbourhoods and road networks to complete the skyline.
A unique creative challenge was recreating the wartime blackout. Without modern lighting, the city was lit only by sporadic fires, distant bomb explosions, and searchlights sweeping the sky, subtle but powerful sources that shaped the tone of the scene. Our focus was to ground the audience in Churchill’s perspective and letting them feel the scale and intensity of what he was witnessing.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a project where visual effects and historical authenticity work hand-in-hand to enrich the storytelling experience.
